The CAT community in Australia & New Zealand were proud to launch the Australian and New Zealand Association of Cognitive Analytic Therapy (ANZACAT) last Friday the 30th April 2010 at Orygen Youth Health in Melbourne. Twenty-four people attended the launch and enjoyed food as well as some fine wines from Australia and New Zealand. We heard tales of the development of CAT ‘Down Under’ from Professor Patrick McGorry (Australian of the Year 2010 & Director of Orygen Youth Health), Dr Sandra Radovini (Assistant Chief Psychiatrist in the state of Victoria) and Dr Andrew Chanen (Director of the HYPE Program, Orygen Youth Health & one of the clinicians to introduce CAT to Australia). The champagne flowed as ANZACAT was officially launched by Dr Louise McCutcheon, director of the CAT training program, and coordinator of the HYPE program at Orygen. We were also pleased to welcome Angela Mohan from Ireland to the launch. Angela has been travelling through Asia, New Zealand and Australia and is providing several workshops and brief CAT therapy experiences to some clinicians in Melbourne. The launch was followed by the inaugural AGM, at which new members heard the latest update from ICATA. The inaugural and the Executive Committee were elected: Louise McCutcheon (President), Andrew Chanen (Vice-President), Emma Burke (Secretary), Dominic Germano (Treasurer), with Marisol Cavieres and Allyson Waite (both living and working in New Zealand) taking the remaining non-office bearing positions on the committee. Unfortunately, our partners across the Tasman were unable to be in Australia for the launch but were there in spirit and we thank them for their support and work towards this impressive achievement. Sixteen members joined ANZACAT on the night, (as either CAT Practitioners or Trainees) and we hope to grow this membership base in the coming months.
CAT was introduced to Melbourne, Australia a decade ago with a randomised controlled trial conducted in the HYPE clinic (Chanen et al., 2008). A replication of this RCT begins in a few months and a modest but dynamic CAT training program continues to expand. Several CAT practitioners moved to New Zealand around 8 years ago, and a large number of practitioners and therapists have attended introductory workshops. The first NZ CAT Skills training is due to start later in the year. Louise and Marisol have represented both Australia and NZ on the ICATA committee, and we hope that our experiences of setting up CAT trainings here are useful and helpful to other countries starting up trainings. We have managed to attend all three international CAT conferences, and we look forward to ANZACAT contributing to and supporting CAT to grow and flourish around the world.
The official launch has been the end of more than a year of hard work by the organising committee and many thanks go to Louise McCutcheon (Aus), Andrew Chanen (Aus), Marisol Cavieres (NZ), Allyson Waite (NZ), Emma Bosworth (NZ), Glenn Rutter (Aus), Vikki Ryall (Aus), Emma Burke (Aus), Dominic Germano (Aus), and Cassie Redlich (Aus) for all their efforts. The ICATA committee, especially Steve Potter, have also been supportive and encouraging and we would like to thank them as well.
Louise McCutcheon, ANZACAT President
