War and CAT

At the end of the last CAT conference I tried to get my colleagues to think and do something about the war. To think: that psychotherapy is a political product, and policy possibly a product of psychotherapy. To do: let politicians know that the Iraq war is crazy.

I felt totally ignored and dismissed.

And that reminded me of my childhood. My father was one of the founders of the anti-fascist movement in the Netherlands in 1933. In my childhood our house was always full of refugees. Karl and Louise Kautsky, the founders of democratic socialism, were part of my childhood.

The wars: l936, l939, l948, l958, l968, l975, l982, l987, l992, l993, l998, 1999, 2003

My father was arrested in l942 and survived the camp. My wife's godmothers were killed in Auschwitz. I was arrested in 1944 by the Gestapo.

And during all that time, and the 50 years since, psychotherapy chose to stay out of politics. It's time to choose.
