Letter from the Chair Mary Dunn
Dear Members of ACAT,
This is a letter about some very important information about the development of ACAT, and the changes which we are implementing.
But the first and most important thing to say is that our administrator, Jonathan Lopez-Real, is leaving us to go to a new job at Guy’s. Many of you will have had occasion to contact Jonathan, and will know the kindness and loyalty with which he has been at the hub of ACAT since 1999. During that time he has helped to steer the organisation through many changes. He has organized Conferences and workshops, and has behind the scenes acted as the driving force at many meetings and events. He has played a crucial role in the IRRAPT Psychotherapy training and the St Thomas’s Practitioner Training, and trainees and graduates will have been aware that he has put personal commitment into both of those trainings. We all wish to thank him for his energy and enthusiasm, and we wish him all the best in his future career. We are hoping Jonathan will be able to come to the AGM lunch so that members can acknowledge their gratitude and convey their good wishes to him in his new role.
Practicalities:
• Our mail will be redirected from the 1st November, and will be dealt-with by Jon Sloper, who currently manages our website.
• The ACAT administration telephone numer has changed to 0844 800 9496. This is a low-rate number charged at 5 pence per minute.
• As soon as the new arrangements for ACAT are clarified we will inform members. The office at St Thomas’s will not be available to us after January 2007, and in the meantime we are working out a new administrative framework;
• The email address still applies;
• We have a new administrator for the IRRAPT and St Thomas’s trainings. She is Jeanie Taylor, and she can be contacted via Hilary Beard’s contact details (Course Director, Psychotherpy Department, Lower Ground Floor, Adamson Centre for Mental Health, Block 8, South Wing, St Thomas’ Hospital, London SE1 7EH. Tel: 0207 188 5412/9630 or Fax: 0207 188 5417. An email address will be set up soon.)
The most important business at the AGM was the Resolution to adopt a new Constitution. The background to this comprises a number of strands coming together to make a compelling case for ACAT to function as a Company (and, we hope, a registered Charity) rather than an unincorporated association.
ACAT is in discussion with Sheffield Hallam University about applying for University Validation for ACAT accredited training courses. ACAT Council and the Training Committee see this as an important development which will enhance the status of our training, by giving it academic recognition. This should make it easier for trainees to gain funding from their employers.
As a result of the Constitutional changes ACAT will be structured with a Board of Trustees and a Board of Management (made up of the current Officers of Council). We expect that this will streamline our operations and enable us to respond more flexibly to the growing regional activities, as well as engaging with the future of Statutory Regulation.
These are very exciting and challenging changes, some outside our control and some that we are choosing to implement. Our aim is always to ensure that our members are supported in their aspirations, protected in their registration and regulation, and fully recognised for the advanced qualities of their skills. Please contact me if you are unsure about the new structure or how to work within it.
